First ever Big Scran a huge Success!

You could say our first ever Scran Academy event has ‘scone down a treat!

On 21 April Scran Academy aimed to hold a big community tea party for our community and supporters, called The Big Scran! This was a youth-run event and we are delighted to announce we raised an awesome £812.80! On top of that we were joined by 127 people from our local and wider community, including Police Officers, Parents, Headteachers, CEOs, Education Scotland, chefs and food Industry, our MSP, Councillors and our neighbours!

Amy, Casey, Connor – our team of young workers – were tremendous on the day. They helped prepare the food, arrange the event space and serve guests a wide range of Scran-made cakes, scones and sandwiches. After the food, guests were then treated to a tour around Scran HQ that finished at our shop where people had the opportunity to buy homemade jams, chutneys, baked goods and gifts – a great opportunity for our young team to show off their newly gained sales skills!

Before the day could finish there was time for a raffle of some wonderful prizes donated by our supporters and powerful speeches from our Founder John Loughton and young worker Connor.

In his speech Connor (15) said “Thanks to Scran I have found a motivation I didn't know I had. Before I was attending school three days a month. Now I’m going three days a week. I’ve got job lined up at a city centre hotel. Thank you all for supporting our social enterprise”.

With the money Big Scran 2018 raised, every penny will be re-invested back into growing Scran Academy. This in practice, will see us be able to run for a further FOUR WEEKS, and to secure the necessary materials to support more young people to overcome their challenges and  become positive and ambitious individuals. A special thank you to our Supporter Partners JCI Edinburgh, Cateredinburgh and Fet Lor, without their help the event wouldn't have been possible.
