We are thrilled to announce that we are part of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities Phase 7, delivered by @Inspiring Scotland, receiving funding to empower young people in North Edinburgh through opportunity, skills and community.
Over the next three years, this funding will help us retrace our roots by supporting more young people across West Pilton, Muirhouse and Granton. These are the areas we were founded in, and they are areas that still face significant challenges, consistently ranking within the lowest 5 to 10 percent on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. Many young people growing up here have their futures limited by poverty, and are more likely to face unemployment, poor mental health and exclusion from school. Many are also at risk of being exploited into crime and risk-taking behaviour.
“We’re so excited to be part of the CashBack for Communities fund. Too often we talk about young people as a problem, but at Scran what we see every day is pure potential, just waiting for the right chance. This fund will help us unlock that potential, creating the relationships, experiences and opportunities that will allow young people in North Edinburgh to shape their own futures. Every young person, no matter their background or barrier, deserves that chance, and we need a Scotland that offers it. Because the truth is, young people are never the problem; they are the solution.” Will Bain, CEO, Scran Academy
We believe every young person deserves the chance to build confidence, gain real experience and feel valued in their community. This funding will help us support 300 young people over the next three years through a mix of kitchen-based youth work, structured placements and paid work. We will provide meaningful opportunities where young people can build skills, gain experience and reach their full potential.
Young people told us they want real opportunities, including chances to gain professional experience and access to supportive environments where they can feel safe and valued. To do this we will work in partnership across North Edinburgh, creating safe and welcoming spaces where young people can spend time constructively, build trusted relationships and feel part of their community.
“I think having Scran do things in West Pilton will be really good because there’s not always that much to do in the area. When the café is open it will be so good to have a thing like that for young people to go to. I think it will be really busy!” Young Muirhouse resident – 17.
We are also proud to continue building our role as a Living Wage employer for young people, by creating real, place-based employment opportunities for young people in North Edinburgh via our café in West Pilton Park, due for completion 2027.
Being part of CashBack for Communities Phase 7 allows us to strengthen our work alongside local partners and continue supporting young people in North Edinburgh into positive futures.
