The plans have been submitted, and so the news is public. It’s a while off, but once developments are complete, we can confirm Scran Academy will open its third café, right in the heart of North Edinburgh.
This one takes us right back to where we’re from. Designed and developed in collaboration with young people from the local area, it will serve the community with inexpensive, delicious scran and a wide range of hot and cold drinks. But, just like the others, what it’s all about is levelling the playing field for local young people - by providing employment and learning opportunities in West Pilton.
Once built, the café will provide meaningful work, flexible support, and a space where young people can take ownership - whether that’s leading shifts, hosting community events, or shaping the next chapter of the business. We’ll work with partners across North Edinburgh to make sure the café is used, loved, and led by the people it’s there for.
The new café will be part of the wider redevelopment of West Pilton Park, which is being led by Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust and the City of Edinburgh Council with support from partners including Fresh Start, North Edinburgh Arts, The Mushroom Trust, and local action groups like the West Pilton Park Action Group and Friends of West Pilton Park. Together, these organisations are creating a park that will include play and skate areas, new planting and paths, a growing garden, a walled garden with murals, and spaces for the community to come together.
Scran Café will sit right in the middle of it all. We’re excited for it to become a welcoming place to eat, work, and connect, a café that belongs to the community and reflects the voices of young people in North Edinburgh.
