Ell is the most recent scraduate of our Scransitions programme and a super talented and hard working young person. We are so glad she got in touch with us and it's been a joy watching her grow over such a short time but let's hear from her about her time at Scran.
In Ells' words:
"I found out about Scran because my mum saw it through her work at the Sick Kids Hospital and thought it would be a good place to help me build my confidence and gain some work experience. Before Scran, I was mostly making art because my mental health made finding employment difficult, so it ended up being exactly the step I needed.
I was really anxious before my placement and about meeting Beth, but everyone was so lovely and welcoming that I felt at ease straight away. I liked that I could ease into things at my own pace and choose between front of house and the kitchen, although the kitchen became my favourite. The one-to-one meetings with Beth also helped a lot with my confidence and mental health, and it was reassuring knowing everyone was there to learn and support each other.
I also had a stall at a Social Enterprise Scotland event where I was able to sell some of my art! and helped at Gracemount Mansion making flower crowns. One lady asked me to make one for her daughter to wear to a concert, I loved chatting about the colours and outfit. I genuinely felt like a fairy.
Scran opened my mind to different creative opportunities, and I even got to design the poster and cupcake toppers for Scran Café @RHCYP’s first birthday. It also helped me become more confident, happier, and better at socialising, which I’m very grateful for. Most importantly, it taught me that it’s okay to ask for support and that I can do things I never thought I could."
Seeing and hearing their journeys is why Scran does what it does. These stories are so powerful and show the impact of our programmes. Every young person has huge potential, but sometimes they need a reminder and the right people at the right time to empowering them to reach their ambitions.
