Scran Café #2: A New Chapter Opens at RHCYP

We’ve got exciting news to share. This is a moment we’ve been working towards, hoping for, and building behind the scenes.

On 15 July, we’ll be opening our second Scran Café inside the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. It’s a huge step for Scran, and one that means so much more than a new space or a second site.

This café represents a vision coming to life. One where young people are at the centre, trusted with real responsibility, supported in meaningful ways, and given the chance to build their confidence, their skills, and their futures.

More Than Coffee

Yes, there will be brilliant food and great coffee. But this is about more than what’s on the menu. This is about what’s possible when young people are empowered.

Our new café will:

  • Offer a calm, caring space for families going through incredibly tough days

  • Give hospital staff a warm, welcoming place to take a real break

  • And importantly, create real jobs and Scransition work placements for young people beginning their journey

We’ve seen what happens when young people are given opportunities that truly matter. They grow. They lead. They surprise even themselves. And every step of the way, they make Scran what it is.

Rooted in Purpose

Opening inside RHCYP places our mission at the heart of one of Edinburgh’s most important places. A space that supports, heals, and cares. We’re honoured to be part of that.

This café is for:

  • Those taking their first step into work

  • Those ready to grow into something more

  • Those who deserve to feel proud of what they can do

We’re energised. We’re emotional. And we’re only just getting started.

“Getting the keys to our Scran Café at the RHCYP is such huge step for us! We’ve got big plans to make this a brilliant, buzzing youth-led hub in the building; somewhere where young people, families and NHS workers can escape, forget about their worries and enjoy some delicious scran in a bright and sunny space. We’re going to make it massive for all building users, hosting pop-ups and celebrations to bring young people’s voices and choices to life in the space. And of course, it will be a powerful step-up space for young people, where dozens of young staff and volunteers will access the opportunities, relationships and experiences needed to help them build their own futures.” Will Bain, CEO

Thank You

We couldn’t do this without the support of our community. A huge thank you to the STV Children’s Appeal and the Ignite Fund, whose belief in this work continues to open doors for the young people we serve.

We’re also incredibly grateful to NHS Lothian and NHS Lothian Charity for welcoming us into the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Their support and partnership have helped make this new café a reality, and we’re proud to be working alongside them in a space that means so much to so many.

We can’t wait to welcome you from 15 July. See you there.
